Persuasive Speaking EXTRA CREDIT

There is a speech and debate tournament at Clackamas High School on Saturday, December 3. If you watch and create a 1 page write up for speaking events, you can receive 25 points extra credit. If you watch and create a write up for debate events, you will receive 40 points extra credit. The schedule is below.

Please show up at least 10 minutes before the event you want to watch is supposed to start. Feel free to call Ameena on the day of the tournament if you need help.

Speaking Events
8:00 – 9:15 Pattern A Round 1-
  • Oratory: Students deliver a memorized speech of persuasion not to exceed ten minutes. It must not contain more than 150 quoted words.
  • Serious Interpretation: Students deliver a memorized excerpt that is serious in nature from prose or drama not to exceed 10 minutes, including the introduction.
  • Humorous Interpretation: Students deliver a memorized excerpt that is humorous in nature from prose or drama not to exceed 10 minutes, including the introduction.
  • Prose: Students read from a manuscript a selection that is not drama or poetry. Dialogue may not exceed 50% of the selection. The selection may be either serious or humorous. Introduction must be memorized. Total time not to exceed 8 minutes.
  • Impromptu: Students are given three topics, usually a word, a quotation, and a current events topic. The student chooses one and begins speaking. Time limit is 5 minutes.
  • ADS: Students deliver a memorized speech to entertain not to exceed 6 minutes. The speech, although humorous, should have an underlying serious theme. This same event at college events is called a "speech to entertain."

9:15 – 10:30 Pattern B Round 1
  • Expository: Students deliver a memorized speech to inform not to exceed 8 minutes. It must not contain more than 100 quoted words. Visual aids are encouraged and expected.
  • Dual: Two students deliver a memorized scene from a play not to exceed 10 minutes, including the introduction. The scene may be serious or humorous. Movement is limited, eye-contact not allowed and no costumes or make-up allowed.
  • Radio: Students deliver a speech from a manuscript that must be between 4 min.45 sec. and 5 min. and 15 sec. long. Anything more or less is disqualified for the round. Topic must be of some current national issue and should offer commentary on the issue and possibly a solution.
  • Extemporaneous: Students are given three topics involving national or international news of the past three months. They must choose one of the three and then are given 30 minutes to prepare a 7 minute speech analyzing the topic
  • Poetry: Students read from a manuscript at least three different poetry selections that are connected by a common theme. The introduction and all transitions must be memorized. Total time not to exceed 8 minutes.

10:30 – 11:45 Pattern A Round 2-Oratory, Serious Interpretation, Humorous, Prose, Impromptu and ADS (described above)

11:45 – 1:00 Patter B Round 2-Expos, Dual, Radio, Extemp, Poetry and Storytelling (described above)

1:30 – 2:45 Pattern A Round 3-Oratory, Serious, Humorous, Prose, Impromptu and ADS (described above)

2:45 – 4:00 Pattern B Round 3-Expos, Dual, Radio, Extemp, Poetry and Storytelling (described above)

4:15 – 6:00 Finals

4:30 – 5:30 ADS or Storytelling finals in Auditorium

Debate Events
8:00 – 9:30 Round 1
  • Lincoln Douglas: This is a one on one debate focusing on values. The topic is: Resolved: A just society ought not use the death penalty as a form of punishment.
  • Cross Examination (CX): This is a two-on-two, research based debate. Speakers often speak very quickly. The topic is: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its public health assistance to Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Public Debate: This is a two-on-two debate, where the two teams are given the topic 15 minutes in advance.
  • Public Forum/Ted Turner: This is a two-on-two debate. The topic is: Resolved: That the United States would be justified in pursuing military options against Iran.
